Driving a Hard Bargain – How to Become a Fearsome Online Shopper

Published by Jennifer at 5:14 pm under Online Shopping, Shopping Tips

These days, it is far nicer to shop online than to drive to a crowded mall, where you might or might not find what you are looking for.  More consumers these days have discovered how convenient and easy it is to do their shopping in the comfort and privacy of their own home.  However, consumers may need to ask themselves what price they are paying for the convenience.

Many online stores charge for shipping fees or build them into the price, so it’s best to determine, are you paying too much for the convenience of online shopping?  Consumers should also ask their friends about their experiences with shopping online sites to select sites that are worthy of their hard earned money.  Another approach is to use a search engine to help search for items you plan to purchase.  When using a search engine to search for a particular item, you will find advertised and non-advertised sites, which offer the item you’re searching for at different prices.

The reason to shop online is as clear as a Christmas bulb.  It saves both the time and hassle spent navigating holiday traffic, looking for parking, visiting store after store to compare prices, waiting in line, and perhaps returning to the store to exchange the item.  By planning ahead, you will be able to save a lot of time by shopping online.  Taking the time to make a list and to set a budget will ensure that you’ll have the gifts chosen and delivered with plenty of time to spare before the special event or holiday.  The trick to shopping online is to find exactly what you want, at the right price, and with the reassurance that it will arrive on time.  The key is to find a favorite service that provides a broad range of gift categories so you can click through your gift list relatively quickly.  Many websites available on the Internet provide links to a variety of categories including books, toys, clothing, furnishings, appliances, and auctions.  They may also have gift guides and gift finders that help you locate that perfect gift for those on your list who insist that you surprise them.

One of the most cumbersome aspects of shopping offline is visiting different stores to compare features and prices.  With the online marketplace, shopping is easier as you can comparison shop.  You will be able to compare prices, features, and product reviews across a wide range of vendors and categories, which will help ensure that you are getting the most value and the best deal.  A web site is only useful when it is live.  Shoppers will want to find a shopping service with a good technology infrastructure, which will ensure the site, is reliable and available any time of the day or night.  To feel confident about your online purchases, be sure to only use sites that comply with industry security standards.  Most online shopping sites require some level of registration so when shoppers share information about themselves, such as credit card information and their interests, they need to make sure the site has a posted privacy policy.

Always use a credit card to pay for your online purchases.  Most credit cards have online purchase protection so if something goes wrong, you will be able to contact your credit card company and dispute the charge.  You do not have to pay for your disputed charges until the dispute is resolved.  However, it is not wise to use a debit card while shopping online.  Debit cards pull money from your bank account as soon as the transaction is made.  Regardless of all the cautionary warnings, shopping online is safer than shopping in an actual store.  You do not have do deal with other shoppers, drive in inclement weather, and touch anything in the store.  When consumers are careful, they can guard themselves against identity and credit card theft.  When using a credit cared in a typical store, there is the sales person who processes the transaction and can see your private information.  The middleman is eliminated in online transactions so the likelihood of fraud is considerably reduced.  If you do your research, watch for signs of fraud, and only use credit cards for your purchases, shopping online will provide more benefits than normal shopping.
