Whether you are planning a steamboat cruise or a flight overseas, it is possible to make a travel plan that fits within your budget.  Many people believe that their dream vacation is out of their reach.  The trick is to plan your vacation using travel tips and tricks that the professionals use.

Everything has a sale season including cruise lines, airlines, trains and hotels.  Knowing when these travel tickets are on sale is key to keeping a travel plan within your budget.  Typically the winter months are the perfect time to plan your travel for the summer months.  Travel agencies can help you take advantage of these special deals or you can search for them yourself through the many online travel agencies on the Internet.  A great way to be privy to these sales is to get on the mailing lists for the cruise line or destination that you are interested in.  Destinations such as Disney offer coupons or reduced prices for their new and repeat customers that are on their mailing lists.

Planning to travel abroad?  Find out when the off-season is for traveling to your destination.  The off-season, which is the low point of the tourist season, is the cheapest time to travel.  Off-season travel can reduce your costs by up to 50 percent, which represents great savings if you are traveling with a large family group.  The downside to traveling in the off-season is that you may have inclement weather.  The upside is that you can often book rooms in luxury hotels for a fraction of the cost during the tourist season.

In order to save money for airline travel your best bet is to purchase your tickets well in advance.  Airlines occasionally offer travel deals when they are trying to fill up a flight and these deals can be found through a travel agent or in ads in your Sunday paper.  Great deals for flights can also be found through travel agents that operate on the Internet such as Expedia or Travelocity.

Package deals are sometimes a way to lower the price of your travel plans.  You should check out how the package would be priced if you purchased the tickets separately though before you book a package.  While some package travel deals can offer extras, there are many that actually trim their costs by eliminating meal options or local transportation.  Consider what you expect to spend on meals before you book a package deal that doesn’t offer anything other than a Continental breakfast.

Another way to save money is to book a travel package through your college alumni office or travel club. These organizations can offer great deals on travel packages and they are often well managed making these trips virtually stress free.  They usually are planned well in advance and usually include meals, translators and local transportation.

Things you should be wary of are travel packages that are offered with few extras and many restrictions.  Examples of things that could be omitted include special side trips that are only available when it is convenient for the travel operators.  These side trips are often canceled in the tourist off-season and if you read the small print in your travel contract you’ll avoid disappointment.  If a side trip is canceled and it is not in writing how this will be handled you may be entitled to a refund on that portion of your trip.

Once you learn how to comparison shop for your travel needs you should be able to find the travel package you want at a price you can afford.  Careful planning should have you on your way to your favorite destination in no time.
