Shopbots
A Quickie Guide for Newbies about Shopbots
There are so many terms used for computer lingo these days that it is often difficult to know what they all mean. Shopbot, for instance, is a shopping program that combines science and convenience. Web users go to a website, ask for what they want to buy, and the computer searches the Web and presents a wide selection of retailers, deals, and prices. Shopbots, however, are not perfect. Many retailers will pay for better placement on shopping sites so the selections that come up first are not always the best deals available. Unless consumers are dealing with the total cost, which includes shipping, handling, fees, and taxes, price comparisons are basically meaningless. Shopbots are also unable to fact in all of the things that are important while shopping, such as will an item be in on time or is it on backorder?
Some websites do find ways to help consumers filter criteria that is important, such as customer satisfaction and product availability. These sites provide great tools to provide a snapshot of what items might be available and at what price. They will also save you a lot of time and effort. There are different features that make a big difference in a website. How much of the site is automatically updated and how much is done manually makes a huge difference. Manual updated limits how recent and how broad a set of products it has. While quality control is higher, the ability to skew lists in favor of advertisers is also higher. These websites should always be considered buyer beware. There can be many things missing from sites that consumers may not be aware of. Shopbots work especially well if the consumer knows what he or she is looking for. Once they have decided what particular item they want, for example a television, they can use a shopbot or two to compare prices. Shopbots are most helpful with commodity items such as books, compact discs, and other items easily found anywhere.Â
Regardless of what shopbot used, consumers can get more from the entire online shopping experience if they keep a few things in mind. Online shopping is not always the least expensive route to take. Shopping sites do not always automatically post the cheapest items first. Typically, most people are drawn to the first couple of items on the screen, believing them to be the best price. Consumers should stick to sites that allow them to re-sort by price or they should prepare to search through a couple of pages of results to find the best price. Consumers should also scope out the seller’s track record. Some sites will give you feedback from others who have dealt with the same online retailers. Others will also explain their rating system. It is wise to remember that the long term rating of a site is more important than the price they offer and consumers should look to prevent problems upfront.
It is more difficult to get accurate pricing information if a consumer is buying multiple items. A shopbot is able to compare one price to another, but it cannot factor in a discount or deal if the consumer is buying more than one item. Shopbots are also a great tool even if you do not use them to buy. Some consumers use shopbots to learn more and compare deals on something they may buy later. Many people use them as an initial guide and cross check the prices available. Shopbots are often promoted as last minute shopping tools. They can be set to notify consumers by email when a product is available at the price they specify, check if the item is available on auction sites, perform automatic price comparisons with other suppliers, and compile ratings on the technical support provided by online suppliers. Because each shopbot specializes in specific types of products, an office might use separate shopbots for computer purchases, travel arrangements, and other purchases of services or products. There are also cashback shopping sites on the Internet. If consumers buy from an e-retailer via a link from these sites, they can earn cash back from them. Once they have earned over a set minimum amount of spending they will receive a cash return.Â
