This Old Clock On eBay: Are You Kidding Me?
Chances are, if you’re reading this, you love antique clocks. One of the easiest ways to get a new time piece for your collection is to go on line to websites selling antiques or, for the lover of deals, to eBay. But how can you tell that the antique clock listed on eBay is really an antique or just an old clock? By looking closely at the description the seller provides of the old clock in question.
Ignore The Word Antique
People don’t really seem to know what the true definition of antique is, and they all seem to wind up selling stuff on eBay. They will always list their old clocks as “antique”. Actually, antique means anything over 100 years old. For some collectors, it means anything made before the Industrial revolution of the mid-1800’s. If anybody has an old clock that is THAT old, they should not really sell it on eBay.
However, more honest sellers will use words like “collectable clock” or “vintage clock” or even “old clock” rather than use the hook “antique”. These sellers want to be sure that they are not misrepresenting their merchandise and don’t want their buyers to be disappointed if they should find out their clocks are a lot younger than hoped for.
“Easily Fixed”
Any old clock is worth a lot less when it does not work, whether it is an antique or not. Fixing any clock takes a lot of money, so often collectors will shy away from a sale knowing that they will have to sink a lot of money into a broken clock. So, many eBay sellers will try to entice these buyers back by claiming that their clocks can be easily fixed.
There is no such thing as being able to easily fix an old clock. It is physically impossible. You have to take the back off, take the whole old clock apart and put it back together and pray that you don’t cause any more damage to it. It’s like being “just a little bit pregnant” – you’re either pregnant or you’re not. Same as with old clocks – they are either broken or they work.
Also, don’t fall for the line that old clocks can run again if they are cleaned. There is no known cleaning method that will get a broken old clock to miraculously start ticking again. And if there is, no one is talking about it.
